Biography

Andrea Kloehn is a flutist based in Boulder, Colorado. An avid chamber musician, she has performed throughout North America and Europe in wind quintets. Her appearances include the Saarburg International Music Festival (2022 guest artist), Orford Musique (2019), Madeline Island Chamber Music (2019) and the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival (2017 fellow). Beyond wind quintet, Andrea enjoys performing a breadth of styles. As part of the University of Colorado’s Pendulum New Music series, she has premiered music ranging from a flute quartet with live electronics to mixed ensemble jazz/classical fusion.

As an orchestral flutist, Andrea has performed with the University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, and Wind Symphony; she’s also played with the Texas Music Festival (2022) and Boulder Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist, she freelances for churches, weddings, and other events.

In 2022, Andrea graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and Certificate in Music Entrepreneurship from the University of Colorado. She’s grateful to her mentors Christina Jennings, Immanuel Davis, and Nancy Maloney. Now a teacher herself, Andrea maintains a private studio in the Boulder area.

Teaching

I love connecting with students through the exploration of music. To me, music is a process of both personal expression and self-discovery. Throughout this process, my goal is to help each student become an empowered musician. An empowered musician makes informed creative decisions, understands the structure and context of what they are playing, collaborates effectively with others, and knows how to keep themselves healthy. In lessons with me, students can expect to build:

  • Healthy technique and body usage

We’ll work to create a strong foundation of both physical skill and theoretical understanding. With a background in Alexander Technique and endurance sports, I focus on body awareness to prevent injury and increase facility on the flute.

  • Aesthetic preferences

One of the most exciting parts of studying music is finding your own artistic voice! I’m honored to help my students discover and create their own paths. While most of my training is in Western classical music, I often help my students jump into jazz and pop music too.

  • Personal skills

We’ll explore many themes that apply to life both in and out of music: how you learn best, assessing strengths and weaknesses, goal setting, using mistakes as a tool for growth, perseverance, and patience.

I grew up with the Suzuki flute method and often incorporate its philosophy (teaching holistically, learning music like a language) into my instruction. I teach in the Boulder and north Denver metro areas. Any prospective student is welcome to take a free 30 minute lesson with me to see if we’re a good fit.
